How can publishers write clear local directory category descriptions?

Directory categories should help readers choose where to look. A category description can be short while still explaining its scope, especially where similar services sit close together or a business could reasonably belong in more than one place.

What should a category description answer?

Explain which services or business types the category covers and what a reader can expect to find. Use familiar words rather than a string of near-identical keywords. If a category is empty, avoid wording that implies a range of businesses is already listed.

How can similar categories be separated?

Decide the difference between broad groups and specialist services before adding descriptions. Use the same approach across the directory. Give businesses a way to request a suitable category without treating category choice as proof of a qualification or editorial endorsement.

How should descriptions be maintained?

Review them when the structure or actual listings change. Remove duplicated categories that add no useful distinction, and keep important pages accessible through sensible navigation. A clearer category system helps readers; simply creating more location-and-service combinations does not make them useful.
