What should newspapers check before adding QR codes to print promotions?

A print QR code connects a physical page with information online. Before printing it, a newspaper should check the destination, the surrounding explanation and who can maintain the linked page after the edition has been distributed.
What should the code lead to?
Choose a relevant, stable page that explains the next step. Make sure a reader is not unexpectedly taken to a login or an unrelated promotion. Put a short explanation and a readable website address near the code so the destination is understandable before scanning.
What should be tested before print approval?
Test the final code at its actual printed size on a proof using more than one device if possible. Check contrast, spacing and the full destination. A code that works in a large design file may still be awkward in its final placement.
Who should maintain the destination?
Assign responsibility for the linked page and any redirect. Check what happens after an event or promotion ends, and provide a useful onward route. Do not delete the destination casually while printed copies may still be in circulation.
